dLibra

dLibra software is the first Polish system for building digital libraries. This software supports the entire publishing process - from the editor work by making a work available online until after the introduction of amendments and publication of subsequent editions. dLibra is widely used by institutions such as academic and public libraries, museums or archives to provide digital form of their collections. It is now the most popular system for building digital libraries in Poland.
dLibra enables creating professional repositories of digital documents and sharing them with other people and systems on the Internet. Data exchange is based on generally accepted standards and protocols such as RSS, RDF, MARC, DublinCore or OAI-PMH. Digital libraries based on dLibra offer their users many powerful possibilities such as searching the content of the collected resources, searching bibliographic descriptions using synonyms dictionary, grouping digital publications and navigating their structure or precise and extensive ability to define rules for access to resources.

The key assumption of the project is to provide and popularize digital resources in society, particularly in the scientific and educational environment. The network of digital libraries and their resources are also an important element necessary to conduct the present researches, international cooperation and advanced researches related to digital libraries themselves.

The first digital library based on dLibra software, Digital Library of Wielkopolska (http://www.wbc.poznan.pl) was launched October 1, 2002 through cooperation between the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center and Poznań Foundation of Scientific Libraries. This library is currently the largest digital library in Poland. Since that time, dLibra system systematically gained in popularity, becoming the most popular system for building digital libraries in Poland.
dLibra is currently used by hundreds of institutions to build dozens of regional and institutional digital libraries (the current list of implementations is available at http://dlibra.psnc.pl/biblioteki/). In addition to publicly accessible installations dLibra is also used for internal applications (such as management of internal documents of the institutions). All publicly accessible libraries together form a platform of distributed Polish digital libraries in PIONIER network, giving access to hundreds of thousands of digital objects and their metadata and for advanced services based on shared objects, such as distributed searching or the network user profile. Integrating element of the platform has been available since June 2007, the Federation of Digital Libraries (http://fbc.pionier.net.pl/.)

Digital libraries based on dLibra offer their users many powerful possibilities such as: searching the content of the collected resources, searching bibliographic descriptions using the dictionary synonyms, and grouping the digital publication navigating their structure or precise and powerful ability to define rules for access to resources. With mechanisms to enable the grouping of works held in collections in the library, the curator can easily present the content to the reader in an interesting and accessible form. In addition, the works are described by keywords, which can be defined based on the standards Dublin Core, MARC or other. This information can be automatically exchanged with other systems via open standards (eg, OAI-PMH, RDF). With these capabilities, as well as searching the content of the works, the reader can easily and quickly find an interesting release.

DLibra system allows the storage of digital objects in any format (eg multifiled HTML pages, PDF documents, audio and video recordings, etc) and each of the stored objects can be described using the framework defined by a set of metadata within a certain repository. Stored objects can be made available to readers on the Internet through a dedicated web site repository. DLibra repositories can also cooperate with other online systems using open communication standards, such as the OAI-PMH protocol, or RSS feeds.

Research on digital libraries are kept in PSNC since 1996. One of the basic assumptions in the design of new services for users is that they were innovative. Therefore, in the framework of the conducted work, among others Digital Libraries Federation (FBC,
http://fbc.pionier.net.pl) was launched - the next stage of building a network of distributed digital libraries and repositories in Poland. FBC provides advanced network services based on digital resources available in Polish digital libraries and repositories running the PIONIER network. Examples of services are services for the coordination of the digitization of libraries (plans for publications and detection of duplicates) or the library user’s network profile. These services can be used by external systems to integrate with the Polish network of digital libraries. DLibra system is integrated with all these services.

The pilot version of the Jagiellonian Digital Library was inaugurated. Virtual Library was created, in order to collect and share digitized copies of the network's most valuable but also threatened collections of the Jagiellonian Library and the Jagiellonian University. The project is implemented through a system of dLibra, drawn up by the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center.
Digital culture and all the opportunities granted to users by new media are leading to reflection on the role and future activities of memory institutions in this extremely interesting times. This cultural transformation were the main topic of “Transforming Culture in the digital age” conference which was held on 14th – 16th of April in Estonian city Tartu.
On 14-15 of April 2010 in Kiev, Ukraine the IV conference “Library and Book in the Context of Time” was held. The conference scope joins scientific topics with the information useful for practitioners. The main organizer of this conference is the National Parliament Library of Ukraine. In this year the main topic of the conference was “Libraries activities on the preservation of national cultural heritage”.
Internet in Poland is the development of democracy - claims the Department for Information Technology Development
of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. This is due to the fact that Poles are increasingly using the network to express their views and to organize themselves. In fact, this year many long expected projects are going to be launched in order to increase the infrastructure development of information society.
On the 1st of March 2010 on the
EuropeanÄ™ projects group website
an annual activity report was published. Section 4.4 of this report unfortunately contains outdated data (coming probably from August 2009, from the “Europeana Content Strategy” document), and according to this data the Polish participation in Europeana is lower than 1%.
