RAMAN Metropolitan Area Network

The history of Metropolitan Area Network in Radom starts in April 1995. At that time, in accordance with the idea of State Committee for Scientific Research to create MAN networks, the investment agreement “Radom Metropolitan Area Network RAMAN", known as RAMAN, was signed.

The signatories of the agreement were: the College of Engineering in Radom (now the Kazimierz Pulaski Technical University of Radom), Institute of Sustainable Technology, Institute of Heating and Sanitary Technology, Provincial Hospital Complex, Higher Theological Seminary ,and the Private College of the Environment. The purpose of the agreement was the construction, maintenance and the development of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in Radom and supporting its development. Currently, only the Technical University of Radom (PRad) and the Institute for Sustainable Technologies (ITE) are working actively in the range of the signed agreement.

At the same time, the construction of afiber network, connecting all PRad and ITE buildings was started. Currently RAMAN fiber optic network covers all PraD and ITE buildings (6.2 km), and 2 radio lines. The basic nodes in the buildings on the territory covered by the infrastructure are located in 20 buildings, connected with the main node with links of acapacity of 1 Gb/s, or 24 and 80 Mb / s as for the radio lines.

RAMAN network node is located in the central digital routes of PIONIER  network, that is - Warsaw-Radom, Radom-Kielce- Krakow and Radom-Pulawy-Lublin, connected by six 10GbE ports, every 2 ports for each route. The RAMAN network is connected by two 1GbE ports to a switch of Polish Optical Internet PIONIER in Radom. RAMAN provides the services of Internet access, application services for institutions connected to the network and data transmission services through PIONIER network. As a research part, RAMAN, together with the subnets, represents more than 3300 active ports of 100Mb/s and over 200 WLAN cards (802.11b/g) of radio network in PRad dormitories.

The decision of the Rector of the Technical University of Radom on 17th of May 1997 established Computer Networking Center (CSK). CSK ensured the supervision over the construction and operation of the emerging network infrastructure, which resulted in the subsequent takeover of the administration of metropolitan node of MAN network and cooperation with other network operators of MAN in this field. In 2010, CSK has been incorporated into the Centre of Informatics and Promotion, which took over the role of the coordinator of the projects implemented by PRad. Therefore, it increased significantly the range of activities performed by CSK.

Currently, the task of this unit are as follows: the operation and development of PRad computer network together with the implementation of development plans, project management, preparation of proposals, tenders and contracts related to the construction and modernization and settling the operating costs. CSK is also involved in maintenance and management of LAN Division of Rector, Chancellor of Administration and the Central Library and the operation and development of Internet services for PRad, that is - e-mail, www, chat, ftp, etc. It supervises also 24h a day the work of  networks and servers, providing the services and Internet access, it also administers high performance computers in the node and conducts the maintenance service of multimedia kiosks.

At the local level, CSK also carries out the works on PLATON projects implemented by RAMAN (video conferencing services, eduroam, campus computing and HD TV), and the Newman project.  In the scope of these projects, video conferencing room has been equipped; it was used for audiovisual communication during meetings, conferences and trainings between the centers that are the members of PIONIER Consortium. The implemented eduroam service that provides secure, wireless Internet access is becoming more popular. The access to this network is possible from 50 access points deployed in the Technical University of Radom. HD TV service, thanks to which the equipment was obtained and arecording studio created, is also being used increasingly for the production of materials promoting and documenting the important events in the life of the University. The last of the services being implemented in PLATON project, which deals with the implementation of, i.e., CSK,  is a service of campus computing. In the main server room an IBM Blade server was installed, with two 4-core Intel processors and 10 graphic application servers. Among them, the following are available: MATLAB, MAPLE, Autodesk, Adobe packages and Windows and Linux compilers. The created environment aims at facilitating and ensuring that workers and students have an access to massive computing power.

Another project carried out within PIONIER consortium is NewMAN. Thanks to this project, the implementation of which has just begun, the main backbone and access switches will be replaced, and network bandwidth will increase to 10 Gb/s.

RAMAN node is the key element in the full computerization of PRad. Thanks to Internet access, expanded server room and the qualified staff of Informatics and Promotion Center (which includes CSK) there is being  implemented a variety of services and service supporting applications connected with the education and administration of the University.

Among the major systems operating in PRad are Internet Candidate Recruitment System, deanery system, electronic student ID system, mass payment system, stipend system, as well as library system, along with the on-line access to the directory of library resources, CMS management of Web sites, personnel - salaries – contracts system, finance and accounting system, storage system, repair system, goods and services sale system and system of assets and resources of low value. Currently, the systems handling the course of study are under implementation/ modification; they include: e-University, Dean's office, e-Recruitment, Lecturer Portal and Business Intelligence and Quality Management System. The scope of these activities is carried out under the project "e-University - the electronic platform of communication within the Technical University of Radom and the community of the region", co-financed from EU funds. Over the dozen of years, RAMAN node has become a key element of the computerization of Prad. Based on this organizational unit, PRad is a part of the canon of building the information society. It is the access to the Internet, servers and services located on a node that allow the academic community to participate actively in the computerization of the city and the region.
